What the unanswered phone costs a pallet yard.
Below is a worked example, not a promise. The percentages come from published research; the buyer rate is a stated assumption; the order value is yours to set. Slide it to your call volume and put in your own average first order. On the call, we run it with your real numbers.
Scale it to your yard
| Inbound calls per month (21 weekdays) | 252 |
| Not answered by a live person — 62% | 156 |
| Hang up without leaving a message — 80% of those | 125 |
| Real buyers among them — worked assumption, 1 in 4 | 31 |
| First orders bought from somebody else, per month | −$15,500 |
Scaled from the worked example — the sliders rescale it; they don’t change the assumptions. A standing account that would have reordered for years isn’t counted here at all, so the real number is usually worse. Your yard’s answer rate, buyer mix, and order sizes will differ; on the call, we run yours.
Where the numbers come from.
- 62% not answered live — 411 Locals mystery-call study, 2024: 85 small businesses called over 30 days; 37.8% of calls answered by a person. A staffed office does better; a yard where everyone is on the floor often does worse.
- 80% leave no voicemail — industry research (Marchex). A caller who leaves no message has usually already dialed the next listing.
- 1 in 4 is a real buyer — a stated assumption for the worked example, not a study. Some calls are vendors, wrong numbers, drivers. Set it against your own experience; even at 1 in 8 the leak is real.
- Average first order — yours. There is no published average order value for pallet businesses, so this page refuses to invent one. The default $500 is a placeholder; type in your real figure.
- Related, for the follow-up side: firms that respond to a lead within 5 minutes are 21× more likely to qualify it than at 30 minutes (Oldroyd / InsideSales.com), and only 37% of companies respond within an hour (Harvard Business Review, 2,241-firm audit).
The fix costs less than one lost order.
PalletCRM texts every missed caller back inside a minute, chases every quote, and flags every regular that goes quiet. Core is $297 a month — for most yards, less than a single first order that walked.
